Info on Koufonisi Koufonissia are two islands of the Small Cyclades southeast of Naxos and west of Amorgos. These are two distinct islands: • Kato koufonisi, inhabited only by a shepherd and his flock of sheep • Ano Koufonisi Usually Keros is also included in the group. Considered, until the nineties one of the last tourist paradises, the two islands were discovered and "invaded" by tourists of predominantly Swedish origin. The only inhabited center is Chora, on the southwest coast of Ano Koufonissi, on a small bay sheltered from the meltemi winds, facing the port where the ferries coming from Piraeus and Naxos dock. Chora has a Cycladic appearance with narrow streets and white houses with blue-stained doors and windows. Adding color is the old windmill on the top of the hill, visible from the ferry before entering the port. To the east of Chora, a paved road winds up and stops after a few kilometers. Along its route are the most popular beaches, the last of which is Foinikas.
