FAQ - Croatia
The most important port for reaching Croatia is undoubtedly Ancona: it is the main Italian Adriatic hub, with year-round departures to Split and Zadar, both day and night sailings. If you are looking for convenience and flexibility, this is often the first choice.
Travellers from southern Italy will find it more convenient to board at Bari, with seasonal connections to Split and Dubrovnik — the pearl of Dalmatia — operated mainly by Jadrolinija. Crossings last between 8 and 11 hours, ideal for an overnight journey with a cabin.
For those living in the north-east, Venice and Trieste are the natural gateways to Croatian Istria — Rovinj, Pula, Poreč — with shorter and faster crossings compared to the central Adriatic routes. Finally, from Pescara there are convenient connections for travellers from central Italy who want to avoid travelling all the way to Ancona.
The absolute fastest route is Trieste–Rovinj, which with Liberty Lines' high-speed catamarans takes just 1 hour and 40 minutes. Practically less than a flight, considering check-in and waiting times. Trieste–Poreč is close behind, with a crossing of around 4 hours and 40 minutes on the longer routes.
From Venice things are not very different: the fast catamarans of Kompas and Venezia Lines reach Rovinj in around 3 hours, and Poreč and Pula in 3 to 4 and a half hours. These are modern vessels that hydrofoil above the water, making them significantly faster than traditional ferries — but generally not suitable for car transport.
If you are travelling with a vehicle, timings change considerably: routes from Ancona to Zadar or Split range between 9 and 11 hours, while from Bari to Dubrovnik the journey takes around 8–10 hours — longer crossings but very comfortable with an overnight cabin.
